Periodontology

Periodontology is the study of the specialised system of hard and soft tissues that supports your teeth and maintains their position in the jaw. This apparatus, known as the periodontium, has some very important functions: it securely attaches the teeth to the jaws; it acts as a shock absorber during biting and chewing and therefore helps to prevent damage to the teeth from excessive forces; and it maintains the teeth in a stable position within the jaws so that that they work together efficiently and comfortably during chewing.

Periodontitis is inflammation of the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. The gum around the tooth root recedes and so-called tooth pockets develop between the tooth and the gums. These pockets cannot be sufficiently cleaned by domestic oral hygiene and the inflammation worsens. Professional support from a dentist is urgently needed to prevent further gum loss. The affected pockets are cleaned micro-invasively using the most modern and gentle methods, and the root surface is smoothed.

Using these procedures there is no need for periodontal surgery.

Our recall system reminds patients to have their periodontal condition checked regularly. In periodontology, we take this prophylaxis very seriously, so it does not cause recurrent disease of the the supporting structures of the teeth. Maintenance after a periodontal treatment in the form of professional teeth cleaning is crucial for a sustainable and long-term result.

Perfect oral hygiene is the best protection against periodontal disease.
